This book explains about the Ayurvedic remedies regarding their preparation, prescription, and their usage in various diseases, effects on the body, when to use and how to how and how all can use. It even throws a light on the Ayurvedic pharmacology and pharmacogonosy. i.e. preparation of various Ayurvedic herbal remedies. This comes under the branch of Bhaishajya Kalpana. The word Bhaishajya means medicine and Kalpana means forms hence the branch, which deals with the various forms of medicine such as syrups, juice, tablet, powder etc. is named as Bhaishajya Kalpana. In Ayurveda the greatest importance is given to the Bhesaja because to treat the disease successfully, a physician should have good quality of drugs and for that he should have the complete knowledge about Bhesaja. Bhaishajya Kalpana includes complete knowledge of drugs including the basic principles of drugs. It has described various procedures like addition or depletion of certain drugs, by keeping the drugs with certain Bhavana dravyas for specific times. If the physician has a good knowledge of Bhaishajya Kalpana he can treat the patient in a better manner.
Bhaishajya Kalpana is of following importance as:
- It increases the potency of medicine by sanskar i.e. vishesh gunantardhana (adding or generating special property).
- It makes the medicine durable.
- It makes the medicine palatable.
- It removes the toxic effect of medicine by Shodhana karma.
- As per the severity of the disease it helps the adjustment of dosha.
- It makes the medicine as per need of patient and disease.
It even explains RASA as a word derived from Sanskrit which has several meaning like:
- It is said as taste in some instances.
- Within some of the instances this is taken as juice.
- In some instances it means the first material formed after digestion or liquids under the transportation system of the body like plasma, chyle, lymph etc.
- And at place it is also said to be a material which can be lick and digest all metals means mercury Rasa Shastra means the “science of mercury”. Since mercury was used after its various kinds of processing called sanskaras for the purpose of converting lower metals into higher metal in alchemy it is also used for the incineration of metals and minerals for the elimination of their toxic components and generate therapeutic value in the end product generally known as Bhasma usable for the body hence they can be used as medicines.
This book even explains that how the most beneficial Bhasm's should be having properties to provide maximum benefit to the users. It even explains in fact how once the metal is converted into the Bhasma it should not be reverted back into the metal by any means called Apunarbhava it should be so light in weight so that it must float on the surface of water after being sprinkled often known as Varitara; its particles should be so small which can pierce in between the lines of the palm and become invisible at the surface of the palm called Rekha purnata. Creation of nano particles of metals and minerals through fusion with the help of mercury and various plant materials and heating process is the basics of Rasa Shastra apart from the purification of toxic materials from plant and animal origin for making their uses for therapeutic values.
Ras Shastra texts classify the metals, minerals, diamond, gemstones and poisons in various category and describes their processing’s called sanskaras to allegedly generate therapeutic properties and make them less toxic to the body in comparison to its therapeutic efficacy. As described in the Vedas, gold and silver had a ritualistic use. Rasa Shastra is believed to have developed and came into its proper existence with its scientific classification and documentation in around 6th and 7th century as explained by this book. The Buddhist sage, known as Nagarjuna, is considered to be the first to use mercury for its alchemic purposes for it is believed to have done much in the creation of Rasa Shastra.
In Ayurvedic medicine, the "science" of working with minerals is named after Rasa (mercury). This is because mercury in Ayurveda considered to be a very powerful medicine. Traditionally it is believed that when mercury is properly prepared, it balances all three doshas (humors of the body), has a soothing effect on the body, and prevents disease and old age. It is claimed to nourish all the vital parts of the body and increases the strength of the eyes. It is a vrisya (aphrodisiac), balya (tonic), snigdha (anointing), Rasayana (rejuvenative), vrana Shodhana and ropana (wound cleaner and healer), and krimighna (antimicrobial). Some people mistakenly believe that when it is compounded with any herb it heightens the medicinal properties. Mercury is also said to give a firm physique, a stable mind, and to be the best destroyer of disease. Furthermore, It is considered holy because it is the semen of Lord Shiva. However, it should be noted that in fact mercury is an extremely toxic heavy metal and should not be used until it has gone through the rigorous processing in Ayurveda.
Thus in this book one finds a complete summary regarding the drugs formulations, preparations etc.
