This book by swami Ram dev ji throws a great deal of light on the era when yoga was a way to healthy living as well as the development of the Yogsadhana into yog Chikitsa. This was meant so as healthy individuals practiced yoga so as to keep their bodies healthy and fit but in case of individuals suffering from diseases this serves the purpose to treat various acute as well as chronic diseases. As mentioned in various ayurvedic texts Yoga in Sanskrit refers to traditional physical and mental disciplines originating in India. The word is associated with meditative practices in Buddhism and Hinduism. These were practiced by various great sages thousands of years back for the sole purpose to bring about tranquility in mind as well as body. These yoga asanas rendered their bodies free from any kind of deformity or disease. At first this was only meant to be a path through which person finds himself in the union of body and mind.
Yoga itself is considered to be the most ancient techniques that are found to be having the evidence in today’s world. Although many people are wary of yoga as either imagining it as a type of weird Eastern religion or else seeing it as a form of soft physical exercise practiced by middle aged ladies. But in actual it was here in our very own country India the yoga originated. Yoga is thus considered to be as old as are civilization. It was practiced only by yogis at first but after that with the passage of time people started to recognize its importance so it was regularly practiced by them. But as time passed by, we humans forgot what our great country has given us and we began to neglect it as merely just as some type of an Eastern religion or just soft exercise. But we have forgotten that the religion that is being followed by the Eastern countries or nations i.e. Buddhism is given to the world by our great country.
Thus the history of yoga is not just merely confined to the past 10, 20, or even 50 to 100 years. But in actual the history of yoga is as old as our civilization. The various evidences of yoga are found even in the very oldest of the Vedas i.e. Rig – Veda that is just said to be a composition of hymns for the supreme power in the nature .i.e. God. When this world began to spread itself are over there were various religions that were coming into its frame but most of these religions although might have been different in their principles but were sharing a very common aspect i.e. Yoga.
The major branches of yoga in Hindu philosophy include Raja Yoga, Karma Yoga, Gyana Yoga, Bhakti Yoga, and Hatha Yoga. “YOGA” as we know it has originated from the ancient India and is the greatest of the gifts that has been given to the mankind by Sages or Yogi’s of the ancient India. There is an ancient Indian saying that if an individual consumes butter everyday in his meals he will become fat and obese; but if the same individual performs yoga everyday and consumes the same amount of butter in his diet he shall attain high levels of energy to easily take up physical as well as mental stress. It was the belief of the sages or yogis that if a man has to be in harmony with the environment and himself he has to integrate or combine his mind, his body and his soul. Therefore for the integration of these three the individual’s intelligence, emotions & actions that one does must be balanced.
The asanas or the postures that are practiced by us took years and years of long practice by the yogi’s or sages so as they became perfect for that all individuals of any age group could practice it. This long determined practice brings about the Yogsadhana which is achieved only by means of uniting your body and mind as one. At first the great sages or yogi’s practiced it for a healthy mind and body. But later on with the new diseases evolving day by day the great sages developed these yoga asanas so as they can benefit in any particular disease. So there are certain types of yogic asanas that when practiced in a particular disease benefits the person way better than the medicine itself.
Therefore Yogsadhana let the way to the development of a new branch of yoga known as the Yog Chikitsa. Thus in Yog Chikitsa it explains how and which asana is to be practice in a particular disease to attain maximum benefit as well as help you to be free from the disease. Therefore this book throws a great deal of light on the Chikitsa of various diseases by practicing yoga.
