This Book by Swami Ram Dev Ji provides you with the detailed info on yoga for the risks that are involved when yoga is performed in an improper or incorrect way, then it also explains to you the precautionary measures that are a must while practicing yoga and further it renders your mind free from the various types of misconceptions regarding yoga.

"YOGA" as we come not only provides physical strength to our body but also gives the mental strength, peace, calmness and serenity to our mind. Yoga is not just the means to reach to tranquility & spirituality; it is a pathway which gives our body the capability to attain much needed positive vibes & reduce down the negative energy. As explained by the great sages in Ayurveda that of the three gunas' Sattva, Rajasa & Tamasa that the living creatures are made up of the "Sattvic" guna is the most beneficial. This "Sattvic" guna is attained by an individual only when he follows the principles that are mentioned in Ayurveda for diet, nature, physical activity, etc. Yoga as we know it has originated from the ancient India and is the greatest of the gifts that has been given to the mankind by Sages or Yogi's of the ancient India. It was the belief of the sages or yogis that if a man has to be in harmony with the environment and himself he has to integrate or combine his mind, his body and his soul. Therefore for the integration of these three the individual's intelligence, emotions & actions that one does must be balanced. Thus the only possible way for the achievement & maintenance of the balance was via the three basic aspects of Yoga:

  • Exercise
  • Breathing &
  • Meditation

Yoga imposes certain disciplines for a balanced and contented life. These disciplines further have scientific justifications. The regular practice of yoga helps by producing a good character, good eating, cleansing, proper breathing, ideal sex and relaxation. It is designed to awaken the characteristics of what it means in life to be human. And moreover it keeps you in harmony with the nature.

This book by Swami Ji explains various risks of yoga that are as follows:

  • If suffering from any type of disease or disorder you must talk to your doctor in order to make sure that practicing yoga will not worsen any conditions you currently have.
  • There are no hard and fast dietary rules necessary to begin the practice of yoga.
  • If you are pregnant, notify the instructor for special guidelines that are necessary for you.
  • Never practice any yoga techniques under the influence of mind altering drugs.
  • If you have a disability, consult both with your medical practitioner and yoga teacher to assess any dangers or difficulties which may occur.
  • Never practice any yoga techniques under the influence of alcohol.
  • It is not necessary that you have to give up everything become vegetarian, or be a purist to learn yoga.
  • During your yoga practice, try to keep your awareness on what you are doing rather than diverting your mind on any other subject.
  • Try not to be concerned with others in the class or outside the room.
  • Proceed slowly and carefully. And you must follow the instructions exactly and never try to alter or manipulate them yourselves.
  • Never force or strain to get into a specific position. Relax briefly between each practice.
  • Learn to distinguish between pain and sensation.
  • If you are in pain, you should stop performing the asana immediately and relax.
  • Do not wear heavy perfumes. Since these block away the sweating pores on your body and does note allows the sweat to come out. And so if the sweat is not released out the toxins are not released out from your body. And also the effect of heavy perfumes can be overpowering in a yoga environment.
  • If a position is uncomfortable, don't do it at all.

Further this book explains the precautionary measures while practicing Yoga:

  • Practicing yoga in a wrong or incorrect manner can aggravate the negative energy, rather than developing positive energy changes in your body and mind. Therefore it is advised that yoga should not be practiced without suitable professional guidance and knowledge.
  • If you're physically unwell, do not practice yoga.
  • Patients who are weak patients are warned against holding their breath while performing Kumbhaka during Pranayama.
  • People suffering from serious problems like heart trouble, high or low blood pressure or any serious organic disease should also avoid asanas or postures which may prove dangerous for them.
  • Practice in the presence of a medical or yoga expert.
  • While practicing yoga when you sweat out do not wipe the body with a towel, but rub the body with your palms.
  • Avoid strenuous physical exercises like gymnastics, weightlifting, jogging, tennis, swimming etc. after asanas and Pranayama. Allow at least 20 minutes rest after yoga and before beginning any other strenuous physical exercise.
  • The sequence of yogic practices must be as follows Kriyas, Asanas, Pranayama, Chittashuddhi and lastly Yoga Nidra.
  • A time schedule should be ideal capacity and to make it a regular practice. For instance, Pranayama can be started with a less duration initially and can be later increased gradually depending on one's capability to concentrate.
  • For the attainment of peace of mind, yoga should be practiced in a quiet, secluded place, where fresh air envelops you for fresh breathing of the mind.
  • It is recommended that you either practice early in the morning, or in early evening on a relatively empty stomach.
  • You are allowed the flexibility of practicing yoga four hours after a heavy meal and 20 minutes after a glass of juice or a cup of skimmed milk. After practice, a meal after half-an-hour is optional.
  • Avoid tea, coffee, smoking, alcohol, sweets, tobacco products, fried food and spices as they activate chemical toxins, which are harmful and lead to stress and illness.
  • Your diet should include raw food, salad and fruits.
  • Drink at least 8-10 glasses of water everyday, irrespective of yogic practice. It helps in cleaning up the system.
  • Initially one may feel stiffness in the muscles but it will ease out after regular practice. Physical comfort is as important as mental comfort while practicing yoga. Hence, clean, loose, free-flowing clothes; preferably cotton garments should be worn. In cold climates, a shirt or sweater can be worn. Jewellery and accessories should be avoided and practice with bare-feet to ensure contact with the ground.
  • As the body has to be stretched in all directions, yogic practice has to be done on a clean mat, rug, carpet or a blanket.
  • It is a must that you should practice Yoga on the ground. Do not practice on sofas and beds.

Although the practice of yoga has become widespread within last 30 years, there are still quite a few misconceptions about this ancient method of self-transformation. Here is a brief survey of the most common myths about yoga, and a look at what yoga is really all about:

  • Yoga is a Sport:
  • One of the important components of yoga is the practice of physical postures, known as asanas in Sanskrit. Due to this physical aspect of yoga, some people consider and misinterpret yoga as a sport or an activity for the purpose of body building. In this sense, yoga is seen as a casual pastime which one can take up and practice now and then like any sport. The fact is that yoga is a science of physical, mental and spiritual development. Although the yoga postures may look as stretching exercises found in some sports. The exercises in yoga are one part of an all-around program of personal development. The postures are not an end in them, but are meant to help prepare one's body for mental and spiritual development.
  • Yoga is only for women:
  • In some parts of the world the majority of yoga students are women, and some men may have picked the idea that yoga is not for them. The fact is that all people searching for inner peace and all people who wish to avoid disease and live a healthy life, Yoga offers something for them as well as for anyone who wishes an effective method of physical, mental or spiritual development and should not be thought of as a discipline reserved only for women or only for men.
  • Incense should be burned when practicing yoga:
  • Although yoga comes from India, and so does much of the world's incense, it is not a good idea to burn incense while performing yoga postures or doing meditation. Yoga postures should be done in a smoke-free area: this includes cigarette smoke and also the smoke of incense. During meditation the smoke of burning incense will cause disturbance and hinder the process of going within. Incense can be used before doing meditation or before practicing postures in order to create a nice atmosphere, but there should not be smoke in the air when the actual practice begins.
  • You have to be extremely agile to practice yoga:
  • It is true that some yoga postures are a bit difficult to perform, and require an agile body. However, just as postures should be selected according to the ailments that a person suffers from, a good yoga instructor will be able to show you postures that are within your reach. When performing yoga postures, you should try to do them to the best of your capacity and you shouldn't worry whether you look like the picture in the book. Often, just the effort that you make in trying to perform the posture is enough to reap the benefits of that posture.
  • Everybody must practice the same postures:
  • In most yoga classes around the world you will find that several people at a time are practicing the same postures. Despite this widespread convention, the needs of individuals vary according to their physical structures and it is best to perform yoga postures that are individually suited to a particular individual. For example, a young man suffering from asthma will need postures that are quite different from an older woman with heart problems.
